Brewing Budget Commander with Baylen, the Haymaker

Reddit

Baylen, the Haymaker

Bloomburrow is finally here and with it brings plenty of new Commander options. Naya token decks received the strongest Commander we have ever seen. Baylen, the Haymaker is a new Commander that makes all your tokens into mana advantage, card draw, and a win condition all in one. When it comes to building a token deck, however, some of the staples cost a pretty penny. Cards like Dockside Extortionist and Doubling Season are great for this Commander, but not all players have the funds to invest into those cards. This entire deck comes just shy of $50 and will definitely pack a serious punch. Let's see just how powerful this new Naya token Commander deck will be on a budget!

Make Tokens

Awakening Zone
Skrelv's Hive
Loyal Apprentice

The most important part of any token deck are the cards that create tokens. Awakening Zone, Skrelv's Hive, and Loyal Apprentice, are going to generate us a token on each of our turns. Cards like Dragon Fodder, Forbidden Friendship, Join the Dance, and Raise the Alarm give us small bursts of tokens; while cards like Farmer Cotton, Wildfire Awakener, Secure the Wastes, and Song of Totentanz are X spells that give us a huge burst of tokens in a single spell. Our commander can turn this batch of freshly made tokens into more mana to cast more token creating spells, card draw, or as a massive boost to his power.

Pest Infestation

Aura Mutation, Artifact Mutation, and Pest Infestation make us tokens while also dealing with pesky artifacts and enchantments our opponents might have. Many Partings and Return from the Wilds make sure we are progressing with our land drops and create a token to boot. Depending on our opponent's board state, Call the Coppercoats could be just like a Dockside Extortionist for us since our Commander can tap tokens for mana. Arasta of the Endless Web, Rocco Street Chef, and Arachnogenesis can generate tokens even on our opponent's turn.

Untapping Our Board

Seedborn Muse
Drumbellow
Quest for Renewal

One of the strongest cards for this deck would be Seedborn Muse. Allowing us to untap all of our permanents every turn, and with Baylen out, it is gameover for our opponents. Unfortunately, Seedborn is slightly out of our budget. Don't fret, we have some budget options to choose from. Drumbellower and Quest for Renewal can untap our creatures and creature tokens each turn. Virtue of Loyalty will untap our creatures on our end step, while also pumping our entire team. We have access to rituals with To Arms! and Rustler Rampage since our creature tokens can be tapped for more mana or card draw.

Going Wide

Impact Tremors
Molten Gatekeeper
Storm Herd

This deck can win in one of two ways. It can either go super wide with an army of tokens or we can make Baylen, the Haymaker huge with the last ability. Going wide should be our main focus since we are playing so many token creators in the deck. In order to win with our tokens, we play pinger effects like Impact Tremors and Molten Gatekeeper, which turn all of our X spells that make tokens into massive burn spells. Intangible Virtue, Pollen-Shield Hare, Roar of Resistance, and Thunderfoot Baloth all grow our army to knock out an opponent or two. Storm Herd and Deploy to the Front should make enough tokens for us to create so much value with our Commander to win on the spot or set up a finishing move on our following turn.

Going Tall

Rosie Cotton of South Lane

Going tall with Baylen is our backup win condition or just a way to deal extra damage to our opponents. Rosie Cotton of South Lane is going to put so many counters on our Commander if left unchecked. Horn of Valhalla and the adventure side of Pollen-Shield Hare do a similar role as Rosie, but we can play those after our huge board is assembled to guarantee an opponent's downfall. Rustler Rampage is a card that untapped our board, but since it has a spree ability to give a creature doublestrike, we can also use it to deal lethal damage with Baylen.

Added Value

Hour of Reckoning
White Sun's Twilight
Royal Treatment

We have ways to make tokens, ways to untap those tokens, and then use them to win the game. The rest of the slots in this build have our ramp, protection, card draw, and removal pieces. Some of them are notable since they make tokens as well as being a vital part to a Commander deck's composition. Hour of Reckoning and White Sun's Twilight will fit as our board wipes perfectly. Glimpse the Impossible and Audience of Trostani will give us tokens and cards in our hand. Lastly, cards like Royal Treatment and Tyvar's Stand protect our commander and either make us a bonus token or a pump effect.

Card Display

With only a small budget of $50, this deck can pack a serious punch. Baylen, the Haymaker might just be the most powerful token deck we have yet to see. If you are interested in this commander, you should definitely give it a try. I am excited to see all of the new cards Bloomburrow will bring across all the formats of Magic, especially Commander.

See you on the Battlefield!
